MARCHING SEASON OPENS
Display At English Park The marching season for 1960-61 went off to a grand start when the official opening was held at English Park yesterday afternoon. The attendance established a record for any marching activity. Thirty-eight teams took part, representing both city and country associations. Mr W. I. McKay, president of the Canterbury centre, said he was pleased to see such a large gathering of the public and such a number of teams. The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) said he was pleased to see such a growth in the sport of marching, and declared the season open. Mr E. H. Timpson was honoured for his past services as secretary of the centre and was presented with a gold watch by Mr Manning.
A special appeal was made for more instructors. At present there are more than 50 girls waiting to form teams as soon as instructors can be found. After the opening ceremony there was a march past when the salute was taken by the Mayor and Mr McKay. During the afternoon demonstrations of the march plans for seniors, juniors, and midgets were given by teams from each Section, and items were given by a harmonica band. A colourful maze march concluded the afternoon.
