Lady Chatterley
A buzz of preparation for the Lady Chatterley trial is reported from London. In the latter part of October ■ the trial of Penguin Books on a charge of publishing an obscene work, to wit, the unexpurgated edition of “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” is expected to come on. .
Both defence and prosecution are being very guarded about the names of experts they may want to put in the box. But the trial can hardly avoid being a sensationally distinguished literary gathering. Among those who are reported to have been asked to stand by to speak for the defence, are Lord Russell and Lord Boothby; numerous writers and critics like V. S. Pritchett, Philip Toynbee, Graham Greene, Aldous Huxley, Sir Harold Nicolson, Kingsley Martin, Karl Miller, Alan Pryce-Jones, and two biographers of Lawrence, Richard Aldington and Harry T. Moore, a professor at Illinois; and Victor Gollancz, Sir Stanley Unwin and Rupert Hart-Davis among several publishers.
The prosecution also has its closely guarded list of possibles. It is rumoured that they include Sir Basil Blackwell, who declined to stock “Lolita” at his Oxford shop; and that a number of Roman Catholic personalities will be asked to give evidence.
