Managing Dirctor Of Quill, Morris Retires

Having served the company and its predecessor for more than 30 years, Mr W. H. Nicholls will retire from the managing-director-ship of Quill, Morris, Ltd., on December 31. Mr Nicholls Is on the board of several other companies and will continue his association with them.

His retirement from Quill, Morris was announced yesterday by the chairman of directors (Mr F. S. Taylor). During the depression, Mr Nicholls and the late Mr J. T. Sutton had the task of reorganising the company, Mr Taylor said. That was successfully completed in 1936. The directorate was highly appreciative of his work not only for the company but for the licensed trade generally over the years. Mr Nicholls has acceded to the board's request to serve the company in an advisory capacity. £5OOO Gift for Research

After an illness, Mr Nicholls made a gift of £5OOO last year to set up a trust for research into diseases of the heart. At the time he undertook the reorganisation of the company, Mr Nicholls was the principal partner in the accountancy firm

of Nicholls, North and Nicholls. He is deputy-chairman of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, and among directorates and trusteeships which he holds are seats on the board of Aulsebrook

and Company, Ltd., and the Cyclone Fencing Company, Ltd. The new managing director will be Mr T. E. Roff, B. Com., and an accountant Until recently, he was associated with R. Powley and Company, with licensed trade interests in Otago, Canterbury. Southland and Wellington. He served as a flying officer with the R.N.Z.AT. during the war. While general manager at Dunedin of Powley’s, he was president for four years of the Otago and Southland Manufacturers' Association. He is on the executive of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society.

Mr Roff was early this year appointed a director of Powley’s on the death of Miss Powley. New Director

Mr G. R. Gregory, who has served almost his working life with the trade and Quill. Morris, of which he is general manager, has been proposed to shareholders for election to the board of directors.
