Shortage Of Teachers
Sir,— ‘Wake Up Teachers” should not worry. New Zealand can put' up with educational second-best. Only advanced civilisations consider a good education worth having. What is there to worry about if we are a thousand teachers short in secondary schools? The general public are not interested in education; teachers are just underworked, overpaid fools in their sight. Let’s build a railway to Nelson; spend money on a parliamentary system which seems to be especially adapted for name-calling and vote-catching and pay any body of workers who can strike higher wages. Forget about higher education standards through smaller classes and better equipment. Don’t bother trying to employ better teachers by luring degree students into the profession with higher wages. Just let the present teachers try to cope and send any children without a teacher-home. —Yours, etc., UNHAPPY SITUATION. September 21, 1960.
