DISTURBANCES AT HASTINGS
Recommendations By Women’s Body
(/Veto Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, September 20. Stricter control of the sale of liquor, the use of military police, and the earlier departure of excursion trains have been recommended by the Hastings branch of the National Council of Women to prevent further Blossom Festival disturbances. The recommendations were that: Hotels should be prohibited from selling liquor to minors. Where the number of customers is to great for strict supervision the hotels should close until a check has been made. Military police should reinforce the police force in riverside picnic grounds and places where teenage gangsters have been known to spend the night in groups without any supervision. Excursion trains should leave the city on their return journeys not later than 11 p.m.
In the event of wet weather, the procession should be held as planned. The president <Mrs J. Cater) said she thought places of entertainment were usually booked out by local patrons. This left little to be seen in Hastings after 10.30 p.m.
