PENALTIES FOR FIGHTING
“Fairly Stern View” To Be Taken
(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, Sept. 20. Because of the disturbances in Hastings on Blossom Day, he would take a fairly stern view of fighting in a public place from now on, Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., said in Hastings today. He fined lan Garthwaite, aged 18, ’ a workman, of Hastings, and Albert Harman, aged 19, a freezing worker, of Hastings, £3 each for fighting in Heretaunga street west on Sunday, and he fined Clarence Hawea, aged 18, a workman, of Te Hauke, £5, and Bernard Reginald Eagle, aged 18, a clerk, of Napier, £3 10s, for fighting in Heretaunga street on Saturday. Eagle pleaded not guilty, but Garthwaite, Harman, and Hawea pleaded guilty. Mr A. G. T. Wane appeared for Garthwaite and Harman. Sergeant R. J. Bryant prosecuted.
“This offence carries a threemonths’ gaol sentence,” said the Magistrate, convicting Garthwaite and Harman, “but this case doesn’t call for that. This Court proposes to take a fairly stern view of fighting in a public place from now on. Recent events obviously call for that.”
