Town Hall Site
Sir, —It is over to Mr Reg H. Stillwell to elucidate this Gilbertian riddle—that a minority council should conduct a possibly hopeless minority poll on three sites, one a majority to each of the others, but both of the others a majority to the “majority.” Then we should have a distressed minority council trying to decide which minority was a majority and harassed by the Church of England. Yet such is .likely to be the case. Only just recently two by-eleetions in Wellington and Nelson could raise only one-eighth and one quarter of the roll in each instance. So why not save all the agony and leave it to the council?—Yours, etc., R. M. THOMSON. September 19, 1960. Sir, —I heartily agree with Reg H. Stillwell that the city council, being a minority owing to the apathy of those electors who did not vote at the last election, should settle the issue once and for all by holding a referendum at the next council election.— Yours, etc., S. W. HICKMOTT. September 19, 1960.
Sir, —In reply to “Reveille,” the “Limes” building is still used as a hospital and is not so old that one would condemn it. As for the Church of England property, it has all been paid for by Church of England people. Canterbury is a Church of England settlement. He has; overlooked part lof the Cathedral grounds was used for the war memorial where the needed Synod Hall might have been. I am afraid “Reveille” will not have his bridge to drive straight into the town hall. There are plenty who have no cars to drive. A good building should have a good front view before it, with plenty of room.—Yours, etc., C. McKAY. September 20, 1960.
