Fitzgerald Avenue Traffic

Sir,—Between 7.30 and 9 a.m., and again between 5 and 6 p.m, the traffic along Fitzgerald avenue acts as a complete brake on traffic from the eastern suburbs. In the morning, workers proceeding to the city from the east are compelled to give way to traffic on their right, and have to wait for long periods. When they eventually gain the right of way they are already late for work This is repeated again in the evening, where Fitzgerald avenue again provides the stumbling block to those workers wishing to leave the city. The obvious solution is the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of the avenue with both Armagh street and Ferry road. This would effectively regulate the flow of traffic. The traffic department may feel that the expense would not be justified for only three hours a day. Nevertheless practical experience might convince them of the annoying delays which are the unhappy lot of the eastern suburban workers.— Yours, etc., FRUSTRATED. August 7, 1960. [The Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) said: “It is fully realised that slight delays do occur, but this applies not only to the eastern suburbs but to many other parts of the city. The installation of, traffic lights at various intersections is a matter for recommendation by the traffic committee.”]
