"NO FEARS FOR FUTURE”
Australian Team On Top
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. September 20. There were no fears for the future of cricket in Australia or anywhere else, the retiring secretary of the Australian Board of Cricket Control (Mr J. Ledward) said today. "Probably for the first time in history, all the cricketing countries are working to a set pattern to resolve the game’s problems,” he said. “The last meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference set a pattern which all countries have agreed to follow.” Mr Ledward, who is 52. announced last night that he had resigned after being cricket’s chief executive officer in Australia since 1953. He said: “Australian cricket has had its ups and downs since I took over. In 1953 we. had just lost the ashes and the game went right into the doldrums after the 1956 tour of England. “Now we’re back on top again. That’s one of the charms of the game, really. Every country has its ups and downs and uncertainties.” Mr Ledward commented on the fact that more and more school cricket was being played. He said: "There are no fears for a game when there are so many lads eager to play it.”
