Magistrate’s Court Driver’s Disqualification Term Extended

“In this time of national hysteria, with supposedly intelligent men making attacks on lenient terms imposed by Court, it would not be amiss for the critics to consider some of the successes achieved by the Courts,” said Mr G. R. Lascelles, counsel for Gavin William Annett, who was appearing in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., on a charge of driving while disqualified, in Wainoni road on December 20. Annett was convicted and fined £5 and the period of disqualification of his driver’s licence was extended by one year. Annett pleaded guilty to the charge on March 22, but as he was on probation at the time, the Magistrate adjourned the charge for six months to see how Annett behaved.

“This type of offence is the second one of its kind and the Magistrate was unaware of the second charge when he placed you on probation,” said the Magistrate to Annett. ‘‘However, you have responded to some extent.” FOUR TRAFFIC CHARGES Fines and costs totalling £23 were entered against Gary David Cockburn, aged 18, when he was convicted on four traffic charges. In addition, his driver’s licence was cancelled for one year. Cockburn, who pleaded guilty to all charges, was fined £lO and his driver’s licence cancelled for one year for driving in a manner which might have been dangerous, £2 for not wearing a safety helmet and £2 for carrying a pillion passenger without a safety helmet He was fined £3 for exceeding 30 miles an hour at an earlier date. “Traffic Officer J. Kotoul checked Cockbum, who was on a motor-cycle, at 50 miles an hour along Hagley avenue on July 29,” said Chief Patrol Officer J. Brown. “Cockburn passed a long line of vehicles in the face of oncoming cars and carried on over the St. Asaph and Tuam street intersections at high speed. The traffic officer was unable to stop him until the light-controlled intersection of Montreal street and Oxford terrace.

“Neither Coekburn nor his pillion passenger was wearing safety helmets. “On June 24, Traffic Officer B. Watson checked Cockburn, who was driving a truck, at 38 miles an hour in Moorhouse avenue,” said Chief Patrol Officer Brown.
