4000Gns For Yearling Bull At Dannevirke

"The Press" Special Service

DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 20. Ten led bulls from the South Island sold for a total of 5050gns at the New Zealand Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association’s annual sale in Dannevirke today. Fourteen southern stud animals were among 53 offered at auction. The sale, which found buyers in a discriminative mood, saw top quality fetching big money while lines which lacked first-class breeding were hot so keenly sought. Both the show and sale were dominated by North Island buyers and breeders. The supreme champion, a yearling from the Donald Grant and Company Mangatoro (Dannevirke) stud sold for a record 4000gns after “scooping the pool” in the led bull show. No South Island bulls were placed. The Mangatoro yearling was bought by Mr Jasper Herrick, of the Tautane Stud, Waipukurau, and the

price was the highest ever paid for a yearling Aberdeen Angus at auction in New Zealand. The bull, Stype Guardian of Mangatoro, was described by the judge, Mr R. Tout, of Wambanumba, Young, N.S.W., as a beautiful beast. Mr Tout praised breeders for the quality of their entries, saying that the standard was “a real education to me coming from Australia.” One of the most successful South Island breeders was Allan Elliott (Marlborough), who sold two bulls for a total of 1350 guineas Leo Baigent (Wakefield, Nelson) sold one at 725 guineas and another at 550 guineas. Canterbury vendors, R. G. and R. E. Allan (Southbridge) sold one at 400gns. Roberts and Company (Middlemarch) received 1125gns for four. One of the few South Island buyers was G. Grieve (Invercargill), who paid 700gns for a Tautane stud senior yearling. Fifty-three bulls sold for a total of 47,225gn5, an overall average of 891gns. Last year the average was 602gns. The most successful vendors were Grant and Company, whose 12 entries sold for a total of 21,700gn5, averaging 1808gns. Balfour stud. Pahiatua, sold five for 4925gn5. an average of 985gns. Run bulls will be shown and later sold at auction tomorrow. About 170 have been catalogued. Show results:— Two-year-old led bulls: Jago 26th of Rawaka 1, Howard of Elgin (J. L.
