(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) ROME. September 3. New Zealand’s No. 1 pedestrian, N. R. Read, gave notice that is likely to win the 50 kilometres walk next week by finishing an excellent fifth in the 20 kilometre event yesterday—a "sprint” distance which be dislikes. Read, who was gold medallist in the 50-kiilometre walk in the Melbourne Olympics, is in tremendous form and finished fresh —only 2rr.in 53sec behind the winner. Gloubnichiy, of Russia. M. Freeman (Australia) was second, F. Vicker (Great Britain) was third, and Linder (Germany) fourth. L. Back (Switzerland) followed Read home in sixth place. There were 37 starters.
