KNOCKOUT FINAL

Marist Beats Technical

If Mari st this season suffered a rather unaccustomed ignomonoy of being in the bottom six club teams it still had a fairly successful season with a win in the D.C.L. Shield competition and now a win in the senior knockout. In the final of the knockout competition at Lancaster Park South on Saturday, Marist beat Technical-Shirley by 14 points to 6. Marist 14: B. Coulter and T. O’Shannessey tries, B. Reilly two penaly goals and a conversion. Technical-Shlrley 6: B. Nunan a field goal, and M. Tyrell a try. The teams were- fairly even in a bright and open match which was not of high quality because of a lot of errors. The Marist forwards and strong defence were mainly responsible for the team’s win because the Technical backs did a great deal of attacking without being able to finish off. The hooker, T. O’Slhannessey, R. Boland, P. Doig, and T. McKendry in the loose, kept forcing away throughout the game and had some long t periods of territorial advantage, especially in the second part of the first half when the side’s two tries were scored. After being down, 0-6, Marist led 8-6 at halftime and Reilly’s two penalty goals in the second half, one of them with the extra 10 yards because of failure to get back, set the seal on success. In the Technical forwards, E. S. Veal, very hard to bring down wah one of the best all-rounders and B. Nunan and B. Arthur were prominent in the loose. Nunan’s pot from about 40 yards was a magnificent one. The backs made some tricky runs and the centre, D. Taylor, played his last game in senior Rugby particularly well. With one run In the second half he swept the field, swerving past opponents but did not have quite the pace to get across. S. Quirk, was always a threat at first five-eighths and he made several threatening breaks and some well-placed kicks, and A. McNabb, outside him and I. Hartland on the wing also showed up. .Silly mistakes with bad passes or mishandling at the end of good runs prevented fruition. „ Best of the Marist backs were the first five-eighths, J. Collier, who was several times quick to make an interception. and M. Ogier.’ In one brilliant movement towards the end of the match, the Marist baoks really showed their form. The ball wenf from Ogier to Collier to Walsh to Ogier again and then to L. Geange on the wing and he nearly scored in the corner. But there were too few such moves from toe Marist backs and the rest of their breaks were mainly opportunist. Mr R. W. Phizacklea was referee.
