Won £6OOO In Lottery
(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 4.
A 21-year-old New Zealander on a visit to Sydney had only 7s 6d in his pocket when he bought a lottery ticket this week. He won £6OOO.
Yesterday, he celebrated his win by playing with Eastern Suburbs fourth grade Rugby team in a semi-final at North Sydney Oval. His team won 6-0. Stephen Clarke, a travelling salesman, of Auckland, came to Sydney in March. He said today that he was “just about flat broke” on Tuesday. “I was passing a Bondi tobacconist’s shop after posting a letter home to my parents,” he said. “Things looked bad. I had only 7s 6d and was about to try to borrow some money. As I passed the shop I thought I might as well spend it on a lottery ticket.” Clarke said he had planned to return to Auckland in October, but would now probably stay inSydney for a few. extra months.
