TWO SPECTATORS INJURED
Rock Thrown Into Rugby Crowd
(Neto Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, September 1. A woman and a man were injured when a spectator threw a rock over his shoulder during the Ranfurly Shield match between Auckland and Northland at Rugby Park yesterday afternoon. Mrs Esma Knight, aged 41, with two children, of Fourth avenue, Whangarei, was knocked semiconscious and suffered a slight scalp wound, and Mr F. R. W. Ramsay, aged 48. of Auckland, received scalp cuts requiring three stitches. Mrs Knight’s husband said spectators on the sidelines had been standing up. then those on the terraces stood up to see. Finally; from the back came cries of “Sit down in front.” Exchanges of shouts included: "It you don’t shut up we’ll throw something at you.” Then a large rock was thrown back into the crowd.
Mr Knight said he thought it bounced off his wife’s head and the bald head of a man who was sitting in the row behind her. Ambulance men treated both casualties and he "grabbed the bloke responsible.”
