Girl For Sentence On 55 Counts

Fifty-five charges of theft as a servant of the Maple Furnishing Company were admitted by a 19-year-old clerk, Janice Dorothy Thompson, of Hamilton, before Mr L. M. Inglis. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton today. Thompson was remanded until Monday for sentence. The Magistrate asked for a probation officer’s report. The charges occurred between January 29 and July 22 this year. The largest amount specified was £35 and the smallest £l. Police said a total of £765 was involved but that only £ll2 was at present owing to Thompson's employers. The accused had been employed for four years as a cashier in the firm’s Hamilton shop, the Court was told. The firm carried on a large hire-purchase business and on August 16, Thompson ha<j been interviewed by the manager in connexion with discrepancies. She readily admitted that she had been stealing from the firm and produced a book in which she had kept a record of this.
