Youth Orchestra
Sir,—Your report from Wellington concerning the National Youth Orchestra, states that this scheme is the only way these young players can gain playing experience with an orchestra and that there is nothing like it in Christchurch, or anywhere else in New Zealand. This is incorrect The Christchurch Youth Orchestra of 70 players has been in existence for some years and performs publicly. Several of the members of the National Youth Orchestra have gained their orchestral experience through playing in the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, which was praised by Mr Hopkins when he heard it rehearsing a few weeks ago. I know of at least three other orchestras here where young players can gain experience. The name of Gwynneth Evans, string bass player, was omitted from your published list of Canterbury members of the National Youth Orchestra.—Yours, etc., KEITH NEWSON. September 1, 1960.
