RACING Cadiz Has Last Sprint Before Melbourne Trip

The Riccarton stablemates, Cadiz and Braganza, yesterday had their last gallop at speed until they get to Melbourne late next week. They ran half a mile in 49 2-ssec on the No. 1 grass, and finished on terms. Cadiz was ridden by A. J. Stokes and Braganza by M. Wildermoth.

J. C. Tomkinson will take them north tomorrow evening and they will sail for Sydney in the Wanganella on Monday.

Mr A. N. Smith’s brilliant Targui geldings will be flown to Melbourne on the day of their arrival in Sydney. Flemington will be their headquarters in Melbourne, where they will race at the Centenary Cup meeting.

Trialists at Riccarton yesterday had firm footing. Some of the early gallops could not be timed because of fog, and none of those timed later for half a mile went faster than Cadiz and Braganza. Cadiz and Braganza worked at three-quarter pace from the mile, before accelerating going to the half mile. A smart six-furlong gallop by Last Link and a fairly fast solo mile by Matauwhi also marked the training. Length Clear Last Link (R. W. Gould) had the outside running whea matched with Gladwyn (G. W. Mein) and Roa (S. Hepburn) but he won the gallop handily. At the end he was a length ahead of Gladwyn, and Roa was three parts of a length back last. Last Link recorded Imin 17 1-5 see for the distance and 50 3-ssec for the last half mile. Matauwhi (G. W. Mein) ran his mile in Imin 46 l-ssec, quickening nicely for the last half mile in 51 4-ssec. Matauwhi may be tried soon over a bit more ground. He has been nominated for the Cup as well as the open sprint at Ashburton next week. Andaman (W. Beck) ran his mile in Imin 48sec. He went fairly evenly from the start, running his last half mile in 53 3-ssec. Magic Circle (G. W. Mein) and Corowa (B. W. McDonald) recorded Imin 46 4-ssec for a mile after dawdling over the first furlong or so. They spurted over the last half mile in 51sec and did their work well. Magic Circle has 8-8 in the Ashburton Cup. He will probably be one of the strong fancies. Gay Tommy (A. J. Stokes) and Shoal (C. McDonald) recorded Imin 48 2-ssec for their mile and 51 4-ssec for the last half. Shoal appeared to work more freely than usual. , Keen Worker Earlier, her half-brother McCool (C. McDonald) went away from the six furlongs very keen to increase his speed. He showed zest for his work to the finish and recorded imin 19 3-ssec, the last half mile in 51 3-ssec. Brydone (R. W. Gould) led

Tamarisk (J. Leach) by a length finishing half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Master Main (N. Cowles) and Gabbler (K. Reggett) finished half a mile abreast in 51 4-ssec. Carrageen, ridden by his trainer, P. H. Jones, recorded 52 4-ssec. Rustic (P. J. Kempton) and Quick Time (W. Donovan) ran from the mile strongly in 51 1-5 sec. Rustic might be one of Riccarton’s more successful campaigners in major spring races. Search Warrant (N. Cowles) and Gambol (R. J. Blair) finished six furlongs abreast in Imin 19 l-ssec. They ran the last half mile strongly in 50 2-ssec. The stablemates Kelp (B. W. McDonald) and Thumper (G. Baldwin) finished their work with a half mile in 52 l-ssec. Shaped Well Rustle (K. Reggett) and Vienna Woods (T. McGill) did well for their class to run half a mile in 50 2-ssec. Rustle is a three-year-old halfsister (by Jekyll) to Rustic. She had, one one race last season. Vienna Woods was placed in her first of four starts last season. Sleat (P. J. Kempton) and Cairo News (W. Hanlin) ran their half mile abreast in 51 3-5 sec. The stablemates Kaseno (D. N. Hadfield), Blonde Sprite (A. J. Stokes), and Balance (N. Cowles) worked away easily from the mile. They quickened slightly for the last half mile, run in 54 4-5 sec. Centesimo (N. Cowles) sprinted six furlongs, the last four in 51 3-ssec. She did her work attractively and if she remains free of unsoundness in the next few weeks she should manage to win a race. Herbs (B. W. McDonald) led Delaware (D. N. Hadfield) over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Delaware was inclined to run greenly and was kept about half a length behind his stablemate. Comic Power (D. N. Hadfield) was clear of Abu El Saad (N. Cowles) and then there was another gap to Swinton Hugh (P. J. Kempton) after running half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Comic Power is a CallanderPower Cut gelding in C. C. Stokes’s team.
