Increases On 1959 Figures
Births and deaths for August In Christchurch both showed increases over the figures for August, 1959, but the deaths for the eight months since January 1, 1960, were less than the previous year, according to vital statistics supplied by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Mr W. S. Bainbridge). Births in August were 486, compared with 433 last August. The eight months’ figure of 3500 was 36 higher than the figure for the previous year.
A total of 225 deaths was recorded, compared with 190 in August, 1960, but the year’s figure of 1530 was 31 less than that for 1959. Marriages in August were six higher than last year, and the eight months’ total was also higher—l 269, compared with 1233. Twenty-seven couples were married by the Registrar, seven fewer than last year. The eight months’ total of registry marriages was 248, which was 15 lower than the 1959 total.
