PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL

Building Programme Deferred

Papanui High School would not get its new workshop block this year, the school’s board of governors was advised, yesterday. A letter from the Department of Education said the plans would be deferred to the 1961-62 financial year. The board had originally proposed plans to build a new workshop and have the existing one converted into laboratories.

“It is not a very satisfactory reply,” said the chairman (Mr O. C. Mitchell). "The accommodation problem here is acute. I think we are worse off than many other schools.”

He suggested a return letter saying the board was disappointed. Dr. L. Ellyett suggested more requests might be made for some of the items on the proposed programme.

It was decided the principal (Mr L. B. Newton) and the secretary of the Post-Primary Schools council ,(Mr P. J. Halligan) should review Mr Halligan’s original letter to the department before replying. The school roll next year was expected to be about 900, and the school was built to accommodate 800, said Mr Newton. He said inspectors had agreed that the school was well down in laboratory accommodation. There were now three effective laboratories and one demonstration room.
