PRESBYTERIAN GIVING

£246,433 During Last Year

Congregations from the Presbytery of Christchurch have given £20,865 towards the wider work and missions of the church in the last year. This was announced yesterday by the general treasurer of the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand (Mr J. C. Smaill), who said it was a record year for Presbyterian giving for this purpose.

The congregations of the church contributed £246,433, £41,406 more than last year—a 20 per cent, increase in giving. Some 253 parishes out of 418 equalled or subscribed more than the quota allocated to them. "There is evidence of a most pleasing response to the call of the General Assembly that parishes voluntarily over-sub-scribe their allocation so that consideration can be given to the possibility of our church embarking on still further new work, particularly in areas of the Pacific basin,” Mr Smaill said. The actual budget expenditure of the church on its wider work, apart from local parish expenditure, was £321,483, and this was partly made up from bequests and other sources than congregational giving. Included in the budget were sums for: overseas missions, £82,297; Maori synod, £67,859; home ministry, £81,109; Christian education. £12,336; theological hall and deaconess college, £33,828.
