West Coast Railcar
Sir, —May I correct your reported time of arrival of last night’s rail-car to 3.20 a.m. (“The Press” had been delivered to the railway book stall), apd express on behalf of some of the passengers, if not all, our sincere thanks to the driver and guard for their arduous task so well carried out during our nine-hour journey to Christchurch? Why two such mechanically out-of-repair Vulcan rail-cars were not attached to a goods train and sent to Christchurch for repairs, instead of on a passenger train, only the Railways Department would know.— Yours, etc., RAIL-CAR PASSENGER. August 16, 1960. [The District Traffic Manager of Railways (Mr C. J. Millin) replies: “When the two railcars left Greymouth they were in good mechanical condition, but en route faults developed which could not be readily rectified by the driver. The railcar services on the West Coast line generally maintain excellent timekeeping and serious delays such as the one referred to are very rare.”!
