TAENIA OVIS RESEARCH

Poor Response To Request For Cats

(New Zealand Press AseortaHnnJ DUNEDIN, August 25. Important research work at the Hydatids Research Unit is likely to be held up if the response to its nation-wide call for 3000 cats does not improve.

About three months ago laboratory tests showed cats could be final hosts of the taenia ovis (sheep measle) parasite and the unit immediately informed its county control officers it wanted 20 cats from each.

Dogs had always been considered the only hosts and the unit feared cats could constitute a reaK problem under New Zealand conditions. But with the deadline. September 1. a week away, only 400 cats have been sent to the chief parasitologist. Dr. G. K. Sweatman.

He fs disappointed because he feels the experiments should start as soon as possible. "The tapeworm had never been reported in the adult stage in cats. We certainly did not expect results like those we had," he said.
