NATIONAL PARTY HEADQUARTERS

Wellington Building Opened

(New Zealand Press Association) WELTJNGTON, August 25.

The opening of the National Party’s Dominion headquarters in Wellington today was a significant milestone in the history of the National Party and a symbol of its maturity, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake). “My mind goes back to occasions when a ceremony such as this in the National Party would have seemed the most impossible of pipe dreams,” he said. “I think of those early, difficult years that followed the formation of our party in 1936. From that day to this has been a long uphill climb.”

Mr Holyoake said that a worthy activity for next year, the party’s silver jubilee year, would be to expand the party membership to exceed 250,000. He could think of no better way of christening the first permanent political headquarters office block in New Zealand than by ensuring that, the first significant event in its history should be a resounding victory in the 1900 General Election, he said.
