SALVATION ARMY TALENT QUEST

Judges Praise Standard

The Salvation Army talent quest opened in the Linwood Citadel on Monday afternoon with the elocution section.

The judge ot this section (Mrs Brundel) said that the standard was high with one or two competitors, particularly in the 13 years to 15 years section outstanding. The scripture reading at sight was also judged by Mrs Brundel. She said the reading varied from fair to excellent. The reading called for accuracy, clarity, and expression, and there was a tendency for some readers not to give enough attention to the punctuation. “Scripture reading was not easy, but even some of the youngest taxing part had read well,” said Mrs Brundel. “David Home and Margaret Skilton were outstanding in their sections.”

The judge of the brass instrumental sections. (Mr R. Simpson) said the tone generally was good. "In some instances, however, players needed to give attention to their tonguing method, as there had been some fuzziness.” He described Donald Oliver, the cornetist. as outstanding in his section, and a player of great promise.
