13 p.c. Of Wool Sold In City
More greasy wool is sold at auction in Auckland than in any other wool-selling centre in New Zealand. In 1959-60, 203,891 bales were sold there—the first time the 200,000 mark has been passed in any centre in New Zealand. Auckland’s 203,891 represented 16.7 per cent, of the total of bales of greasy wool sold at auction in New Zealand last season, compared with 16.5 per cent. the previous season. The Christchurch total last season was 163,967 bales, which represented 13.5 per cent, of the total, compared with 13.0 per cent, the previous year. Total sales of greasy wool at auction were 1,218,794 bales, a rise of 1.5 per cent, on the total for the previous year. Sales ol scoured wool at auction rose from 8567 bales to 12,402 bales. Large increases were shown in private sales of greasy and scoured wool. Sales through brokers rose from 26,404 bales to 32,172 bales and private sales otherwise than through brokers rose from 54,653 bales to 78,119 bales. Total disposals rose 54,516 bales or 4.0 per cent., to 1,433,585 bales Disposals by all means at Napier totalled 258,')29 bales, compared with Auckland’s 241,359. Christchurch disposals totalled 179,625 bales, or 12.5 per cent, of the total, compared with Napier’s 18.0 per cent. The Christchurch total represented an increase of 5.7 per cent, on the previous year’s total.
Napier's disposals showed the biggest increase—7.B per cent.— while Timaru and Dunedin disposals fell 2.3 per cent, and 2.2 per cent, respectively.
