Huge Damage In Fiji (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SUVA, August 24. Fires in Fiji's canefields have burned 12,289 tons of sugar cane, estimated to be worth £36,867 Included in the total is 9100 tons of Colonial Sugar Refining Company cane worth £27,300. Many of the larger fires have been on the company’s Lengalenga estate, near Nandi International Airport, where the eighth fire broke out early today. It burned 400 tons of cane and brought the Lengalenga total to 3410 tons, worth £10,230. Three big fires at Rakiraki. in northern Viti Levu, last night burned 675 tons of cane, worth £2025. Tthe deadlock between two of the Indian farmers’ unions and the sugar company continues to hold up the harvest in Viti Levu, with the threat of economic disaster to Fiji. In Vanua Levu, however, the Lambasa mill continues to receive ample supplies of harvested cane for crushing.

Committed for Trial.—The 22-year-old Russian immigrant, Alex Hildebrandt, was committed for trial in Brisbane Police Court today on a charge of having attempted to kill the co-pilot of a Trans-Australia Airlines Electra aircraft in the air over Brisbane on July 19. He also faces four other charges. The trial is set for September 26.—Brisbane. August 22.
