Basketball ASSOCIATION’S FUNDS
Increased Hard Court Levy More than 500 lower-grade players returned their raffle books unsold in the recent raffle, and 301 senior players made no effort to assist by even selling one book of tickets, reported the convener of the raffle. Miss H. Yates, to a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Basketball Association. After discussing Miss Yates’s report the executive decided that an increase in the hard court levy would be the fairest method of raising funds for the new pavilion. The executive will move at the annual meeting next season to increase the hard court and building fund from the present 4s 6d for senior teams to 7s a team, and the junior levy from 2s 3d a team to 3s 6d a team. Referees were appointed for representative fixtures as follows:—v. Wellington (Muir Cup), Miss C, Brown: v. Wellington Colts (Alison Cup), Mrs A. South: v. Otago (West Cup), Mrs F. Gough; v. Ashburton (third grade), Mrs R. Overend: v. Ashburton (fourth grade). Miss D. Mann: v. Ashburton (fifth and sixth grades). Miss B. Stone. Because of the senior representative fixture next Saturday, when Canterbury will play South Canterbury for the Lane Cup. senior games will commence at 10.30 a.m.. when •two rounds will be played. The final game between Technical and Sacred Heart will comence at 11.15 a.m. The representative fixture will commence at 2.15 p.m. It was also decided that the annual fixture between the executive and the referees be played on September 3 after the Alison Cup fixture. The closing day for the season will be held on September 10, and the executive will entertain referees, selectors and canteen staff to a buffet dinner in the pavilion in the evening. Miss Helen Yates, manager of the senior representative team, presented her report on the 1960 quadrangular tournament. Because of the poor weather conditions, the team did not play up to expectations, but the experience of playing in such wet conditions would probably be of benefit to players for the tournament. A disquieting feature of the tournament had been the fact that candidates for the New Zealand referees’ badge had been taking their practical test on the three Canterbury games. This matter had been discussed at the meeting held after the tournament. and it was agreed that in future years these quadrangular tournament games should not be used for referees’ examinations. Next year’s tournament will be run by the Southland Country Sub-As-sociation at Winton. Saturday's Draw Senior.—lo.3o a.m.: Teachers' Col. v. Kakatai, Court 3; 10.30 a.m.: St. Nicholas v. West A.
