MORE HOSTELS NEEDED
Demand Exceeds Accommodation
The number of school hostels in existence was inadequate and extension of the system was urgently needed after a proper survey, the Post-primary Teachers” Association told the Education Commission yesterday. It recommends that:— (1) Governing bodies-have control of the remuneration of teachers working in hostels. (2) Revision and extension of boarding bursaries. (3) Consideration in any survey of a number of domestic problems listed. (4) Opposition to the regimentation of any central system for hostels. In detailed evidence on many points, the association emphasised that all hostels had demands far exceeding accommodation. In 1948 there were 32 with 3076 boarders out of a State postprimary school population of 44,556. This was 6.9 boarding places a thousand pupils. In 1958 there were 33 State hostels with 3847 boarders out of a total roll of 82,670 or 4.6 places a thousand pupils. This change of 67 per cent, had occurred in a decade. More realistic conditions for obtaining bursaries were urged.
