WEST COAST’S ECONOMY

Report Of Inquiry Committee (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 2. Steps were being taken to speed up printing of the report of the West Coast Committee of Inquiry, and the Government had decided it would be released to the. public, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) in Parliament today. Coalmining recommendations were contained in the report, he said, but he did not think it proper for him to make any comment until the report had been released.

Mr Holloway was replying to Mr D. C. Seath (Opposition, Waitomo), who asked whether the committee had recommended closure of all uneconomic mines on the West Coast. Mr Seath also asked if any alternative means of providing employment was planned for the West Coast if such action was contemplated. According to a newspaper report the committee indicated that all 13 West Coast State mines were uneconomic, he said.
