TWO YOUTHS IN COURT
“Met Another Thief On The Job” (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, August 1. Two men who arrived at a Hamilton shop, which they intended to burgle, found a lone contemporary already part of the way in, Detective Senior-Sergeant J. G. Long told Mr L. M. Inglis, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton today. He said the three had joined forces in the task, gaining entry and stealing goods. Jack Mervyn Barnes, aged 18, and Kelly James Rongo, aged 20, had earlier been convicted and remanded for sentence. Additional charges, three against them jointly, and one against Rogo, were preferred at the hearing today. Detective Senior-Sergeant Long said Rongo was charged altogether with two shopbreaking offences carried out orvhis own. in addition to the one ne had committed in company with two others, who had been dealt with at a sitting of the Court earlier. “The association of Barnes and Rongo began at this stage,” Mr Long said. “Together they broke into five shops. A charge of theft against Barnes relates to a £6O camera which he stole from a car.” Rongo was at present on parole from Waikeria. Sentencing Rongo to 18 months' imprisonment, on each charge, the terms to be concurrent, Mr Inglis said he would have imposed a much heavier penalty had it not been for Rongo’s age.
He remanded Barnes for sentence so he could give further consideration to the fresh charges preferred.
