GASWORKS FIRE AT MASTERTON

Flames Cut Lines As Brigade Alerted (New Zealand Press Association) MASTERTON, August 1. While a fire in the Masterton Municipal Gasworks was being reported today, the telephones went dead as the fire cut the lines. The Masterton Fire Brigade had received the message, however, and rushed to the fire, which was burning fiercely in the changing rooms and showers. They brought the outbreak trader control in 15 minutes and prevented it from spreading to the other wooden buildings housing equipment vital to the supply of gas. As the main switchboard was burnt out, the power supply was cut off and the gas supply was interrupted for a short time. The fire gutted the staff block and destroyed clothing belonging to council staff.
