PLEA BY MRS POWERS
“17.5. Not Doing Enough” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 31. Mrs Francis Gary Powers said last night she felt the United States was not doing all it could to persuade the Soviet Union to release her husband. Powers, pilot of the American U-2 plane brought down in the Soviet Union on May 1, is scheduled to go on trial on August 17 on spy charges. “My husband’s flight was part of a programme requiring the approval of Congress and a Presidential order," she said. "I have seen nothing that the State Department has begun to negotiate for his release. “I would like to see a little more action. It is important to me, very important. Negotiations could at least be started.” Her comments came in a press conference after Mrs Powers appealed personally to the Soviet Embassy for a visa to visit her husband. Embassy officials told her they were awaiting word from Moscow on the visa application, made on July 8. “I would certainly like to attend the trial,” she said. “I have asked the Russians if I can be with him every minute their laws permit.”
