CUPS DOUBLE BETTING
Big Support For English Horse (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, August 1. Mullin, an English horse which has won over one mile and a quarter at Epsom, has rocketed up among the top. fancies for the Caulfield Cup, and is now on the fourth line of favouritism. Mullin has been coupled substantially in doubles with prominent Melbourne Cup contenders, mainly Tulloch and the New Zealand horse, Ilumquh. Ilumquh is now a clear-cut second favourite for the Melbourne Cup behind the New Zealandbred champion. Mr Chris Jenkins, one of Australia’s leading oggrators on the two-cups double, said at the week-end that the support for Mullin had been the feature of cups betting since the declaration of weights.
“It goes without saying that Tulloch is very popular for the Melbourne Cup,” said Mr Jenkins. “The bulk of doubles laid end with Tulloch.”
Mullin is owned by Mr Stanley Wootton, who sent him to Australia to be trained by V. P. Bernard.
Mullin, a five-year-old gelding, is by the Irish horse. Hard Sauce, sire of last year’s English Derby winner. Hard Ridden. He had a first-class record in England last year when, in nine starts, he won five races and had a second and a third. He has 8-10 in the Caulfield Cup, and is engaged also in the Melbourne Cup with 8-4. He seems a likely type for a Caulfield as, before winning over one -nile and a quarter at Epsom with 8-7, he ran seven furlongs in Imin 21sec at Brighton to equal the course record.
