OLD AMMUNITION STOLEN
Thieves Believed To Be Children (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 1. Old deteriorated 22 and .45 calibre ammunition, much of it highly dangerous, was stolen from the Colonial Ammunition Company factory at Mt Eden during the week-end. The thieves are believed to have been children or youths. Some of the ammunition was later found in the quarry of the Auckland prison. A warning that the stolen ammunition was so old that it could explode if used was made today by the police. They asked parents who found their children with ammunition to hand it to the police immediately. The thieves had made a determined effort to reach the ammunition, said Mr I. M. Chambers general manager of the company. They broke through two fences, split a case and scattered several cartons of bullets about the area.
“The ammunition is quite unusable,” said Mr Chambers. “It is definitely dangerous to use.” The old ammunition was stored in the area for destruction.
