Toll Circuits Cut

There was widespread disruption to toll circuits when a car crashed in to a pole and snapped it off at the base on the Main North Road near the Kaiapoi Borough southern boundary at 10.50 a.m. yesterday. Two strands of about 16 pairs of telephone lines were brought down. A gang of six Post and Telegraph linesmen went to the scene, the pole was replaced and temporary repairs were carried out with interruption cable so that all circuits were restored by 3.35 p.m.

The following circuits were cut: 36 to Wellington, three to Nelson, nine to Rangiora, four to Amberley, six to Kaikoura, three to Cheviot, one to Culverden, two to Oxford, two to Hawarden, two to Hanmer and one to Waikari. All the land lines to Wellington were cut but contact was maintained with a radio bearer system.
