Seamen Refuse To Man Ships Again

MELBOURNE, August 1. Seamen refused to man ships tied up in Melbourne today, again immobilising the port Shipowners were able to sign on only nine men when they called for crews at the Melbourne pick-up centre.

The shipowners indicated tonight that if seamen refused to work again tomorrow they would take Court action. Seamen in all other major Australian ports except Hobart returned to work today. Ten ships are still tied up In Melbourne, and four in Hobart.

The seamen stopped work last Tuesday when Mr Justice Foster refused to grant seamen higher penalty rates for week-end work and other alterations they sought to their award.
