AUCKLAND, July 31. Two R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderland flying boats based at Lauthala Bay, Fiji, made a fruitless search on Saturday for two missing Japanese trawlers. The aircraft arrived at Hobsonville on Saturday night The trawlers are missing somewhere between Fiji and New Zealand. One of the ships has not been heard of since July 21. The search was initiated at the request of the Japanese Government
The Sunderlands returned to Fiji today, making another search sweep on the way. The search will end at sunset tomorrow and by then the flying boats from Lauthala Bay will have searched more than 30,000 square miles of the Pacific.
The search began at first light on Saturday and five aircraft have taken part without success.
There are 30 trawlers in the area making a radar search difficult
Each Sunderland is spending an average of 15 hours on each sortie and covering 4500 square miles. The area of possibility where the ships could be will be fully covered by nightfall tomorrow.
