HOME AID SERVICE IN DEMAND
Staff Shortage Bar To Expansion There is still a strong demand for the home aid service in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin; where the service operates, says the annual report of the Department of Labour presented by the Secretary of Labour (Mr H. L. Bockett). During the year, an average of 53 home aids were employed in these centres, compared with an average of 58 in the previous year. Home aid assistance, was given in 2111 cases, including 629 maternity cases, compared with 1901 and 765 cases'respectively in the previous year. The report says the charge to householders for home aid help is 4s an hour or £8 a week, but there is provision for reduced charges to householders who are financially unable to pay the maximum. Because of an inadequate number of aids, 443 applications for the service had to be declined during the year. “This reflects the popularity and need for the service but unfortunately recruiting of suitable women is difficult and is limiting the expansion of the service,” says the report.
