Obituary MR R. A. GARDNER
(New Zeaiana Press Association) ROTORUA, July 29. The death occurred at the Rotorua Hospital this morning, after a long illness, of Mr Robin Adair Gardner. He was 79. He was a son of the late Mr David Gardner, who came to New Zealand from Maryborough, Queensland, in 1902, and took over the "Rotorua Chronicle,” the predecessor of the “Rotorua Post.”
When Mr David Gardner died in 1918 the responsibilities of the newspaper were taken over by his sons. Mr R. A. Gardner became sole proprietor on the death of his brother Russell in 1922 and in 1931, when the newspaper was taken over by the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty Publishing Company as the "Rotorua Post” he became works manager. Mr Gardner retired in 1954 after 50 years’ association with the newspaper. He is survived by his wife and one sonMR G. A. SPEARS (New Zeaiana Press Association) NELSON, July 28. Mr George Alexander . Spears. Nelson Education Board inspector, died last night after a sudden illness which incapacitated him a fortnight ago. Mr Spears, who was aged 55 years, was head master at the Takaka District High School from 1955 to 1958, when he joined the inspectorate. He was previously in Dunedin, where he was lecturer at the Teachers’ Training College from 1950 to 1955. He held the degree of BA. of Otago University
