NEW INTEREST IN ART OF PLOUGHING
“Better ploughing means better i crops and the New Zealand 1 ploughing championships, as each i year passes, will contribute more ' and more to increased crop pro- i duction,” the president of the 1 New Zealand Ploughing Associa- < tion, Mr J. S. Marshall, Junior, 1 of Invercargill, said yesterday oh > the eve of the 1960 national final. 1 There was no doubt, said Mr Marshall, that the added impetus ! to competitive ploughing in New Zealand provided by the sponsorship of a national ploughing contest by the Atlantic Union Oil 1 Company had renewed and further 1 developed the interest in plough- ! ing of the farming community. “We have certainly come a long ■ way since the first New Zealand final in 1956. Undoubtedly there has been a vast improvement in
ploughing techniques as shown by the high standard now required among qualifiers for the final. There has been no relaxation of interest by ploughmen. Requests for qualifying events each year continue to increase and this year there were six applications in addition to the 22 approved by the New Zealand executive.” With his brother, Mr Marshall farms a property of 340 acres at Waianiwa, which is about 14 miles west of Invercargill. The flock includes 1000 ewis, of which 300 are stud Romneys, and 600 dry sheep which are mainly ram and ewe hoggets. About 60 cattle are run the year round but at. present there are 100 on the farm. There is an Aberdeen Angus stud on the farm.
