(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 28.

A New Zealander. Mr L. E. Smith, formerly administrative manager of the TA.B, in Wellington, has been appointed general manager of the new Totalisator Agency Board in Victoria.

Mr Smith’s appointment was announced today soon after the newlyconstituted board had elected Sir Chester Manifold its first chairman. Before joining the T.A.B. in Wellington about eight years ago, Mr Smith, aged 41. was with the Department of Health. He joined the department from New Plymouth in 1939.

Mr Smith came to Melbourne at the board's invitation recently to assist in organising off-course betting in Victoria. A Press Association message from Wellington says Mr L. Smith is at present administration manager at the head office of the Totalisator Agency Board, Wellington. Educated at New Plymouth Boys’ High School, Mr Smith attended Auckland and Sydney Universities by arrangement with the Royal New Zealand Navy, with which he served during the war.

A past president of the Wellington Junior Chamber of Commerce, Mr Smith is at present an executive member.
