KATANGA SPLIT
Opposition’s Demand BRUSSELS, July 27. The Opposition Party walked out of the Katanga Provincial Assembly in Elisabethville today and its leader threatened to set up a separate government in the province. The walk-out was in protest against methods used by the Katanga Prime Minister (Mr Moise Tshombe) to declare independence from the Congo. Opposition members protested that their people did not want to be independent from the Congo. The Opposition Leader (Mr Prosper Hlunga Mwamba) called for a coalition government in the province. He warned that if this was not formed his party would set up its own government in north-east Katanga, where it has popular support from the Baluba tribe. He said the entire Opposition was astonished that the Government persisted with independence when it was composed of only one party. He said the Katanga Government must consider the province part of file Congo unit, stop arbitrary arrests and the damage of property, free arrested Opposition members, and scrap the new Katanga flag.
