Rough Rugby

Sir,—A local Rugby player, who had been ordered off the field by the referee for unneces-

sarily vigorous tactics and was subsequently hauled before an investigating committee, is reported to have said in extenuation, “It was a high-scoring game; there was no need to use dirt at all.” As a revealing commentary on current football ethics, that must surely rank as one of the sayings of file year.—Yours, etc., ILAM. July 27, 1960.
