NATIONAL SERVICE REGISTRATION
Army Most Popular
Choice
The Army is still the favourite choice for youths who have to register for National Service, according to figures supplied by the Secretary of Labour (Mr H. L. Bockett) in the annual report of the Labour Department. Of the 27,195 youths who registered their choice of service last year, 17,502 elected the Army as their first choice, 6781 chose the Air Force and 2912 the Navy. Although registrants are not now required to perform military service, 429 of those registering indicated that if they were required to perform military service they would object on grounds of conscience.
The report says that 27,500 youths were registered during the year, a figure which showed there was little default on the part of those liable to register. Of the 19,552 youths medically examined, 79 per cent passed the examination.
