Phizo, leader of the Naga tribesmen rebelling against Indian rule in Assam, claimed in 1 ndon today that Indian troops had raped, shot, mutilated and killed thousands of his fellow countrymen. Appealing to the world to "help us in our plight,” Mr Phizo told journalists he wanted an independent commission of Nagas and Indians to inquire into his allegations. If nothing came of his plea, be would seek to raise the matter at the United Nations, he added.

“In Nagaland there have been terrible atrocities, shameful acts far beyond what the modern nations would like to believe.”

He alleged that the initial incident took place at Yengpang in 1954. In this small village, containing only 47 houses, he claimed. Indian troops massacred the inhabitants—6o men. women and children.

His allegations against Indian troops included starvation, killing, rape and forced prostitution, forced labour, concentration camps and torture. Mr Phizo hammered on a table as he declared: “We are helpless.”

Cyclist Injured.—A man suffered head injuries when he fell from his cycle in Aidwins road about noon yesterday. He is Brian Simpson, of 11 Bass street He was admitted to the Christchurch Publie Hospital where his condition was later reported to be satisfactory.
