SEAMEN ON STRIKE

Request Refused By Court (N2. Press Association—Copvrtphri SYDNEY, Mr 28. Australian seamen began a nation-wide 48-bour strike at noon today. The stoppage involves mere than 3300 men and will boid up at least 80 coastal and inter-State ships in Australian ports. It will cause heavy delays in the already seriously congested ports. The seamen went out on strike after Judge Porter in the Arbitration Commission, sitting in Melbourne, rejected a request by the Senmen’s Union to vary an amend be made last February. The seamen walked off their ships as soon as they heard that the Court had rejected their union’s application tor a variation of their award on weak-end penalty rates. The State secretary of the Smmen’s Union. Mr B. Smith, said in Sydney that 400 seamen, at a local Mopwork meeting, had decided to adjourn their business until 9 am next Thursday, when the Court's decision would be more fully considered. "Seamen will not resume duty in the meantime." he said. Similar decisions were taken by seamen in other ports.
