PUBLICATIONS OF UNIVERSITY
New Committee Set Up
A publications committee of the Professorial Board has been set up by the University of Canterbury to manage a new venture for which an annual grant of £750 has been made. The first members are the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn). Professors R. S. Allan, N. C. Phillips, and R. T. Sussex, with Mr A. W. Stockwell (English department) as editor. The committee will administer the grant, invite contributions for publication from and through the staff, and decide on their publication after consultation (if necessary) with expert readers, handle applications for publication assistance grants, and consider the future of university publications in general. Reporting all this to the university council Dr. Llewellyn said that scientific and engineering staff and other research workers could usually find avenues for publication in their learned journals; arts faculty members could place shorter types of papers; but there was difficulty in obtaining publication of scholarly works of a length between a paper and a book. It was this need which the committee would consider in the first instance.
Other universities with publica-
tions facilities found that the reputation of the university and their scholars was greatly enhanced, Dr. Llewellyn said.
