10 M41 TANKS ORDERED
New Equipment For Army
Included in the purchases of new equipment authorised by the Cabinet for the Regular Brigade Group, amounting to £3.3 million, are 10 M4l tanks which are expected to arrive from the United States towards the end of the year, and recoilless anti-tank guns, says the Chief of General Staff (Major-General Sir Stephen Weir) in the annual report on the New Zealand Army. Also ordered are 2000 Sterling sub-machine guns from the United Kingdom. The first 500 FN rifles of a total order of 15,000 have been received from Australia. The report says that 324 threeton general-service type vehicles have been ordered from the United Kingdom for assembly in New. Zealand. Of these 144 have been delivered and the remaining 180 will be delivered before March, 1961. One hundred and ten utility vehicles, mostly with a long wheel-base, have been delivered and of the 830 wireless sets ordered for delivery over the three financial years, 1959-62, about one-third have already been received.
