SEMINAR FOR HISTORIANS
“Class” Concept To Be Discussed A seminar for historians—the first of its kind airranged by the University of Canterbury—will be held from August 23 to 25. It has been planned by the adult education department and the history and political science department as a refresher course for persons interested in the serious study ; of the subject Accordingly, one of the most influential historical concepts in the modern age, “Class in history,” ' has been chosen for study under . the guidance of university staff. . The course is considered to have ' special interest for graduates, school teachers, journalists, broadcasters, clergymen, and all others , to whom a knowledge of the processes of historical change is important The programme includes morning, afternoon, and evening sessions on two days and a full day’s discussions on the third. Themes at the sessions and the speakers will be:—“Historians and the idea of class,” Dr. J. G. A. Pocock; “Max Weber and the 18th century Reformation,” Professor N. C. Phillips; “The role of history in modern education,” a symposium; “R. H. Tawney and the English Civil War,” Mr S. A. M. Adshead; "Charles Beard and the American Constitution,” Mr S. V. R. Young; “William Pember Reeves and the. “Long White Cloud,” Mr W. J. Gardner: "Lenin and the Russian Revolution.” Mr J. J. Saunders; "Harold Laski and the English revolution that never was,” Mr G. H. W. Parker. Applications close with the adult education department on August 12.
